The Police have arrested two men and two women, aged between 18 and 27, for their suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment.

On 3 January 2025 at about 5.50am, the Police were alerted to a case of suspected loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Tampines Street 33, where the gate of the unit was secured with a bicycle lock and a debtor’s note was left behind.

Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identities of the four persons and arrested them within the same day. Four mobile phones were seized as case exhibits. Preliminary investigations revealed that they were allegedly involved in another case of loanshark harassment.

They will be charged in court on 4 January 2025 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5000 and $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes.

The Police have zero-tolerance for loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance or disrupt public safety, peace and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not work with or assist them in any way. The public can call ‘999’ if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
