The Police have arrested a 43-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a series of cheating cases.

Between June and November 2024, the Police received multiple reports from different merchants in Tampines, of a man who had allegedly cheated their cashiers by claiming that he was given a shortage of change for his purchase. Investigations revealed that the man allegedly paid for a low value product with a $100 note in some cases. Upon receiving the right amount of change, he would allegedly hide a $50 note and claimed that he was given the incorrect amount of change. The cashier would then provide the man with another $50 note without realising that the correct amount of change had been given earlier. To avoid detection, the man also put on a face mask and headgear to conceal his facial features.

Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from CCTV and Police cameras, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 9 January 2025. He was believed to have cheated more than $100 using this modus operandi.

The man will be charged in court on 10 January 2025 with the offence of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code 1871. The offence of cheating carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine.
