Eleven men, aged between 21 and 41, and one 24-year-old woman will be charged in court on 22 January 2025 for driving a motor vehicle without a valid driving licence and insurance coverage. Another two men, aged 29 and 31, will also be charged on the same day for driving whilst under disqualification.
The details of the cases are as follows:
- On 7 January 2025, between 7.30 am and 9.30 am, nine male motorcyclists, aged between 21 and 39, were stopped for checks by Police officers along Admiralty Road West. They were found to be riding motorcycles without valid driving licences and insurance coverage. All nine men will be charged for driving a motor vehicle without a valid driving licence under Section 35(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 and using a motor vehicle without insurance coverage under Section 3(1) of the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act 1960.
- On 27 December 2024, a 26-year-old man was stopped for a check by an Immigration and Checkpoints Authority officer at Woodlands Checkpoint. He was found to be riding a motorcycle without a valid driving licence and insurance coverage. He will be charged for driving a motor vehicle without a valid driving licence under Section 35(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 and using a motor vehicle without insurance coverage under Section 3(1) of the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act 1960.
- On 26 December 2024, a 41-year-old man was stopped for a check by a Police officer along Ubi Avenue 3. He was found to be driving a car without a valid driving licence and insurance coverage. The man had taken the car without the owner’s consent. It was the third time the man had been caught driving a car without a valid driving licence and insurance coverage. He will be charged for driving a motor vehicle without a valid driving licence under Section 35(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961, using a motor vehicle without insurance coverage under Section 3(1) of the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act 1960 and driving away a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent under Section 96(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961.
- On 26 December 2024, a 31-year-old male car driver got into an accident with a car and a lorry along Central Expressway towards Ayer Rajah Expressway. A Police officer conducted a check and discovered that he was driving the car whilst under disqualification. The man was previously convicted in court for drink-driving on 29 February 2024 and was disqualified from holding a driving licence for all classes for a period of 30 months, from 29 February 2024 to 28 August 2026. He will be charged for driving a motor vehicle whilst under disqualification under Section 43(4)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 and using a motor vehicle without insurance coverage under Section 3(1) of the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act 1960.
- On 5 August 2024, a 29-year-old man was directed by a Police officer to stop for a check along Kaki Bukit Avenue 4. The man sped off and was subsequently detained along Kaki Bukit Road 4. The man was found to be driving the motorcar whilst under disqualification for the second time. He was previously convicted in court on 19 January 2023 for drink-driving and was disqualified from holding a driving licence for all classes for a period of 48 months, from 19 January 2023 to 18 January 2027. He was caught again for driving a motor vehicle whilst under disqualification on 11 May 2023 and was sentenced to eight weeks imprisonment, and disqualified from holding a driving licence for all classes for eight years till 24 November 2031. He will be charged for driving a motor vehicle whilst under disqualification under Section 43(4)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 (2nd time offender) and using a motor vehicle without insurance coverage under Section 3(1) of the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act 1960 (2nd timer offender).
- On 19 May 2024, a 24-year-old woman was stopped for checks by a Police officer along Woodlands Avenue 2. She was found to be driving a car without a valid driving licence and insurance coverage. She will be charged for driving a motor vehicle without a valid driving licence under Section 35(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 and using a motor vehicle without insurance coverage under Section 3(1) of the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act 1960.
The offences of driving a motor vehicle without a valid driving licence under Section 35(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 carries a fine of up to $10,000, or an imprisonment term of up to three years, or both. Repeat offenders are liable to a fine of up to $20,000, or an imprisonment term of up to six years, or both.
The offence of using a motor vehicle without insurance coverage under Section 3(1) of the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act 1960 carries a fine of up to $1,000, or an imprisonment term of up to three months, or both.
The offence of driving whilst under disqualification under Section 43(4) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 carries a fine of up to $10,000, or an imprisonment term of up to three years, or both. Repeat offenders are liable to a fine of up to $20,000, or an imprisonment term of up to six years, or both.
The offence of driving away any motor vehicle without the owner’s consent under Section 96(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 carries a fine of up to $1000, or an imprisonment term of up to three months.
The Traffic Police takes a serious view of those who drive without a valid driving licence and insurance coverage. Such reckless and irresponsible acts endanger the safety of the driver and that of other road users. The Traffic Police will continue to step up on its enforcement efforts and take firm action against those who disregard the law.
