The Police have arrested a 47-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman for their suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment.
On 5 February 2025 at about 10.10am, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit located along Geylang Bahru where the main gate and door of the unit were splashed with pink paint.
Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Central Police Division established the identities of the two persons and arrested them on 6 February 2025. The man was subsequently found to be in possession of a knuckle duster and a replica gun without a license. He was also found in possession of substances believed to be controlled drugs.
Investigations against the man are ongoing for drug-related offences, possessing a replica gun without license, and possessing a scheduled weapon. The offence of possessing a replica gun without license carries an imprisonment term up to three years and a fine not exceeding $5,000 for every such gun. Possession of a scheduled weapon under Section 7 of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 carries an imprisonment term of up to five years and caning with not less than six strokes.
Both persons will be charged in court on 8 February 2025 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine of not less than $5000, and not more than $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes.
The Police have zero tolerance for loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance and disruption to public safety and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not to work with or assist them in any way. The public can call the Police at ‘999’ if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
