The Traffic Police (TP) and People’s Association (PA), with support from the Singapore Road Safety Council (SRSC) and Land Transport Authority (LTA), launched the Road Safety Day on 15 February 2025 at Chong Pang. Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law was the Guest-of-Honour for the event, which was attended by more than 1000 residents. Assoc Prof Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs & Ministry of National Development, also attended the event.
Road Safety Day
The Road Safety Day is the latest initiative by TP to engage the community and promote good road safety practices and habits amongst them. It features a variety of interactive and educational activities designed to engage residents of all ages, including concerts, interactive demonstrations, exhibitions, and family-friendly activities promoting safe road use. Visitors are able to gain insights into road safety rules and practices from TP and learn about proper personal mobility device usage from LTA; and explore SBS Transit's educational bus display to understand bus drivers’ blind spots. These hands-on experiences were designed to make road safety education more engaging and accessible for the community. Over the next two years, the Road Safety Day events will be held in various locations progressively, to reach out to the community and further promote awareness of road safety.
Importance of community involvement in road safety
Commander of Traffic Police, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SAC) Daniel Tan, emphasised the importance of community involvement, stating, "Road safety is a shared responsibility. We urge all road users to work with us, and be more responsible, considerate and safety conscious. Gracious road behaviour will make Singapore an even better place to live. By being mindful of one another on our roads, we create a ripple effect of safety that benefits our entire community."
To amplify road safety public education and outreach efforts, the SRSC is collaborating with public and private stakeholders, including the Automobile Association of Singapore, TP, LTA, and the Ministry of Education to increase public awareness on road safety habits through the formation of the Road Safety Outreach Taskforce. Some planned initiatives include the production and distribution of road safety banners to all constituencies to spread road safety awareness at the grassroots level, and the use of social media channels to reinforce road safety messages.
Chairman of SRSC, Mr Bernard Tay, said, "The Singapore Road Safety Council has worked closely with the Traffic Police and Land Transport Authority to launch the first nationwide road safety initiative targeting every neighbourhood in Singapore. This will include putting up road safety banners on pedestrian overhead bridges where road safety messages will be highly visible to many motorists. With the support from PA, the banners put up by SRSC will benefit every constituency in Singapore. SRSC believes that this will help to reduce the number of road accidents in Singapore, as motorists are constantly reminded to be responsible road users. Road safety begins with you and me."
The inaugural Road Safety Day marks a significant milestone in TP's ongoing efforts to improve road safety. Through this event and future initiatives, TP, SRSC and their partners aim to foster a culture of responsible road use, leading to safer roads for everyone.
