The Police have arrested a 25-year-old woman for her suspected involvement in a series of loanshark harassment.
Between 11 and 12 March 2025, the Police were alerted to two separate cases of loanshark harassment at two residential units in the vicinity of Edgefield Plains. In the first case, a parcel containing a debtor’s note and dead scorpion was delivered to a residential unit. In the second case, a parcel containing a debtor’s note and a live spider was delivered to a residential unit.
Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Ang Mo Kio Division established the identity of the woman and arrested her on 2 April 2025. Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman is allegedly involved in at least five cases of loanshark harassment island wide.
The woman will be charged in court on 3 April 2025 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years and caning of up to six strokes.
The Police have zero tolerance against loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance or disrupt public safety, peace, and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not to work with or assist them in any way. The public can call the Police at ‘999’ ifthey suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
