Father-daughter duo SI Julaimi Bin Jamali and Sgt Natassha Lydia Binte Julaimi share their story on their love for music and their journey in the SPF Band.

In 2017, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) Band welcomed 23-year-old Sergeant (Sgt) Natassha Lydia Binte Julaimi to their team. It wasn’t just another new colleague for Station Inspector (SI) Julaimi Bin Jamali, but his very own beloved daughter.

SI Julaimi began his career in the Force in 1991, and his passion for music led him to join the SPF Band in 1995, where he's currently its Chief Musician.

His love for music, however, doesn't stop with him in his family, as he soon discovered that Sgt Natassha possessed an innate talent and passion for music as well.

Curiosity Turns into Passion
“My dad had a huge influence on me when I was young, and I enjoyed watching him perform. That sparked my interest in music, which has now turned into a burning passion,” Sgt Natassha shared.

SI Julaimi often brought his musical scores home to practise, and this piqued Sgt Natassha’s curious mind as a child. He recounted how his daughter would linger around and watch him inquisitively as he practised.

“She would sit next to me, sing along, and even use forks and spoons to mimic me,” SI Julaimi shared, smiling while reminiscing.

Sharing the same love for music as her father, Sgt Natassha studied audio production in the LASALLE College of the Arts. Upon graduation, she joined the SPF and was later scouted by the SPF Band as a clarinettist and sound engineer.

An Ever-growing Bond
As the only daughter among three siblings, Sgt Natassha is especially close to her father. “There’s always something to talk about with each other,” Sgt Natassha shared and SI Julaimi nodded in agreement with a wide smile.

“When we’re out for dinner, we often share with the rest of the family about our recent performances or upcoming projects. The many common topics that we share have brought us even closer over the years,” Sgt Natassha added.

In their free time, the father-daughter duo often combines their talents to produce music covers, which Sgt Natassha then uploads onto her social media accounts.

SI Julaimi even turned Sgt Natassha’s room into a music studio because she wanted to have one of her own. As such, the pair has made multiple music videos from the comfort of their home.

“She has a lot of creative ideas, so I’ll take her lead and we’ll make music together,” SI Julaimi added.

The Legacy Lives On
After more than 30 years in the Force, six of which were spent together with his daughter, SI Julaimi bids a bittersweet farewell to not only the SPF Band, but also to the workplace camaraderie he shares with his daughter.

SI Julaimi has many unforgettable memories of his time together with his daughter in the SPF Band. He recalled a particular moment during a performance at the Esplanade, when the event emcee introduced the SPF Band members and mentioned the father-daughter duo. The special mention received a huge round of applause from the audience and made SI Julaimi proud of what they had achieved together.

With SI Julaimi’s years of experience, Sgt Natassha can always lean on him for guidance. Without him, she wouldn’t be where she is today.

Looking back at the days she spent with her father in the SPF Band, Sgt Natassha said, “Music has ignited a passionate fire within me, but it’s my dad’s unwavering support and love that fuelled my creative journey, making every melody I create, a testament to our bond.”

Although SI Julaimi will be retiring from the Force soon, he's certain that Sgt Natassha will continue his musical legacy. “I love her so much, and I’m proud of her and her achievements. I know my legacy will live on in her.”
