23-year-old Sergeant (Sgt) Ivie Lim excels in not one, but three sports – basketball, dragon-boating and Muay Thai! She juggles these athletic pursuits and her duty as a Ground Response Force (GRF) officer. Police Life finds out how she does so, and more!
Tell us about yourself!
Hello! I’m Ivie and I’ve been a GRF officer at Toa Payoh Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) for more than a year. We’re the first responders to “999” calls, and we safeguard our neighbourhood by conducting patrols to prevent, deter and detect crime.
What does your daily routine comprise?
As a GRF officer, I work 12-hour morning and night shifts. I’ve two days off after these shifts.
I usually do my regular run and warm-up exercises at night after morning shifts. The following day, I attend dragon-boat training sessions in the morning before my night shifts.
My first day off begins after my night shift ends. I’ll head home and rest up before attending basketball training later in the day. On my second day off, I’ll attend Muay Thai training and spend time with my loved ones!
What motivated you to take up more than one sport?
I’m naturally a very adventurous person. I enjoy being active and find it stress-relieving. Hence, I chose to take up a variety of sports.
How has your training benefitted your overall well-being?
Besides keeping fit, I’m also able to maintain work-life balance with my active lifestyle. I’m glad to have found a way to incorporate my passion for sports into my duties as an officer.
What skills or lessons have you learnt from sports that you’ve been able to apply at work?
Dedication, perseverance, resilience, discipline, confidence and teamwork are some of the key qualities that I’ve gained from playing sports! These have helped me remain positive and manoeuvre through challenges that I face.
My family and beloved husband are also always right by my side, ready to lend a helping hand and push me forward. Their unwavering love and support have always motivated me.
What teams do you play for?
I represented the Singapore Police Force in the Ministry of Home Affairs Women’s Basketball Team for the Home Team Games in 2022, and recently played in the Pesta Sukan 2023 tournament. I also represented Tanglin Police Division for the Police Sports Association Inter-Division Tournament and was also a member of our Division’s Women’s Dragon-boat team that year.
Beyond the Home Team, I play for the Blazers in the Women Basketball League. We competed in the Singapore Youth Olympic Festival in 2016. I’m also part of a dragon-boat team called Team Kraken, and we emerged champions at the grand final of the Tampines Paddlefest 2023!
What’s your proudest sporting accomplishment?
One of my proudest achievements is representing Toa Payoh NPC at the Echo Sports Day 2022 and clinching first place in a 100m sprint challenge, which helped us achieve the “Best NPC” title for the event!
Other memorable moments include competing with my teammates to achieve victory. We’ve won trophies, medals and prizes, but the most treasured reward for me is the time spent and memories made with my friends!
What advice do you have for other officers to keep fit?
It’s all about the mentality! Make time to exercise and keep fit. Keep pushing and your hard work will pay off. Never give up! If you fall seven times, stand up eight!
