Welcome to the west, with its diverse operational terrain – Sgt (V) Aminuddin Bin Aladdin shares insights as a VSC officer at Jurong East NPC!
By: Ashwini Jayasankar
Attending to “999” calls and conducting patrols – these are all part of Sergeant (Sgt) (V) Aminuddin Bin Aladdin’s duties as a Volunteer Special Constabulary (VSC) officer at Jurong East Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC)! He sheds light on what led him to embark on his VSC journey.
What’s your regular job when you’re not a VSC officer?
I’m an HR professional in the manufacturing industry.
What inspired you to sign up as a VSC officer?
Volunteering has always held a special place in my heart. The idea of giving back to the community and making a positive impact on the lives of others has been a driving force in my life. I joined the Singapore Police Force as a volunteer in March 2020, and I’ve never looked back!
Tell us about your experience working at Jurong East NPC.
The operational terrain that Jurong East NPC oversees is very diverse. As Ground Response Force (GRF) officers, we attend to incidents at heartland neighbourhoods, bustling shopping centres, industrial areas, migrant worker dormitories and even on Jurong Island! It takes vigour and adaptability to effectively carry out our duties in such diverse terrain.
Tell us about the team of regular and VSC officers that you work with at Jurong East NPC.
We’re constantly trying to learn from each other. One of the great things about the team is how our Team Leader conducts debriefs following every tour of duty. We talk through the things that the team has done well, and what we could have done better. Such sharing sessions help us to respond more effectively when we eventually encounter similar situations on the ground.
How do your personal values align with the responsibilities of being a VSC officer?
One of my core values is to show empathy in whatever I do. This value takes on greater significance in my role as a VSC officer because our responsibility is to enforce the law and help members of the public in their time of need.
How do you balance your VSC, work and family commitments?
It can be challenging. As VSC officers, we serve a minimum of 16 hours a month. Volunteering, work and family are all important to me, and it’s crucial to strike the right balance.
Besides “volunteer,” what does the “V” in “VSC” mean to you?
“Vigour!” Whatever I do, I give it my all. My personal ethos is not to be half-hearted in my efforts, and I firmly believe that dedication is the driving force behind any meaningful achievement in life. That’s how I feel about serving as a VSC officer. If you’re looking for the opportunity to contribute to the community and to also acquire valuable life experiences, look no further; the VSC is for you!
