The Reserve Unit of the Singapore Police Force (SPF) was formed in 1953, in the wake of the Maria Hertogh riots in 1950. This marked the origin of the Special Operations Command (SOC). Seventy years on, the SOC has transformed into a strategic force for the SPF, providing the highest level of tactical armed response through the Special Tactics and Rescue (STAR) Unit, a broad range of public order capabilities in the Police Tactical Unit (PTU) and a highly-skilled K-9 Unit.
The PTU performs security-related duties and responds to terrorist incidents in the form of Armed Strike Teams. To be ever-ready, discipline and training are of utmost importance. At the SOC 70th anniversary parade on 10 November 2023, Public Order officers gave a thrilling demonstration of their capabilities! Every move was sharp, precise, and decisive as they made a tactical advance towards the seating gallery, in formation before their familiar red Tactical Vehicles.
The Public Order officers were then joined by the fellow SOC officers from the STAR Unit, K-9 Unit, United Nations Peacekeeping Force, Special Women Task Team and Crisis Negotiation Unit. Together, they made up two contingents and performed a Ministerial Salute to the parade Reviewing Officer, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law Mr K Shanmugam.
The SOC commemorated its 70th anniversary by launching a time capsule to preserve its history, values and mission for future generations. The capsule contains significant items, including the SOC 70th Anniversary Patch Collage, representing unity among SOC units; the Challenge Coin symbolising the bond among Special Operations officers; and a red beret, exclusive to SOC officers and symbolising bravery and sacrifice. The time capsule is set to be opened on the SOC’s 100th Anniversary in 2053.
Looking ahead, the SOC remains committed to leveraging the latest technologies to deal with security threats effectively. But the calibre and skills of the officers remains central as the job requires tremendous resilience and highly specialised capabilities.
As the anniversary celebrations drew to a close, parade contingents and guests paid homage to SOC officers past and present for their courage, honour and discipline, qualities that have helped make the SOC the force it is today – ready to provide the highest tactical option to keep Singapore safe and secure, whenever the need arises.
