The Public Transport Security Command (TransCom) is a specialist unit within the Singapore Police Force (SPF) that oversees and manages policing efforts across the entire public land transport network, comprising rail and bus networks.

Among the dedicated Full-time Police National Service (PNSF) officers in TransCom’s ranks is Special Constable Corporal (SC/Cpl) Muhammad Farhan Zulkifli. In addition to his responsibilities as a TransCom trainer, SC/Cpl Farhan also represents the Young Lions in the Singapore Premier League. Learn more about SC/Cpl Farhan’s strategy for scoring goals at work and on the pitch!

Tell us more about your journey through TransCom.
After enlisting in January 2023, I spent three months in TransCom attending a five-week basic course, followed by a one-month ground attachment conducting patrols at major transport nodes and responding to incidents. Subsequently, I joined the Training Branch and became an Assistant Operations Field Instructor (FI) after completing a two-week FI course at the Home Team Academy.

I chose to join TransCom because it allows me to develop my leadership skills. About 80% of TransCom officers are PNSF officers, and we have the opportunity to lead a team during daily patrols, which is not always the case at other units. I aspire to effectively guide and inspire the people around me and those under my charge.

During one of my patrols, I attended to a case at Kranji MRT Station involving a suspect with a prohibited weapon. Although I was nervous at first, I found the confidence to manage the incident, with my Group Leader’s guidance. Making my first arrest during my one-month ground attachment was also an eye-opening experience.

What are your responsibilities as an Assistant Operations FI?
I conduct courses to train new TransCom officers so that they’re well-prepared for their frontline duties.

I also fulfil the responsibilities of a Physical Training Instructor, ensuring that officers maintain their physical fitness levels. I helped develop a 12-week training regimen tailored to boost officers’ confidence and enhance their preparation for the Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT). I also analyse officers’ records to refine the programme and optimise training effectiveness.

Finally, in addition to my trainer responsibilities, I also conduct quarterly patrols on the ground.

What can new TransCom officers expect during training?
The training programme for new enlistees spans five weeks, covering a broad range of topics from theoretical knowledge to physical training. As TransCom officers need to interact with members of the public and respond to different cases, the training also includes scenario-based sessions to prepare officers for real-world incidents, providing practical experience in handling various situations.

You’re also a football player with the Young Lions. How do you manage your time between your NS, football and family commitments?
Maintaining my football career while serving NS requires sacrifice and prioritisation. My weekends aren’t always rest-days due to the match schedule, so I plan my days accordingly. Despite my busy schedule, I also value spending time with my family and girlfriend.

My day typically starts with NS duties from 8:30am to 6pm, followed by football training from 7pm to 9pm. I usually reach home around 10pm. I cherish the time I have with my family, enjoying meals together. Although it’s challenging, I stay disciplined and motivated by reminding myself of my goal of honing my leadership skills in NS.

What do you find fulfilling as a trainer?
It’s gratifying to witness the progress of our officers. Some come into the training programme with lifestyle habits that could be improved, for example. We take these into consideration and craft a customised training programme for them. Upon retaking their IPPT after completing the programme, we see significant improvements in the officers’ performance. These positive changes demonstrate the effectiveness of the training and the officers’ dedication to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which makes me proud of the work I do!

What advice would you give to officers who’re new to TransCom?
TransCom allows individuals to take on responsibility and to lead. Officers will need to step out of their comfort zones as they interact with members of the public daily and handle various cases to keep Singapore’s public transport network safe and secure. Be ready to learn from your seniors and Group Leaders, and you’ll gain valuable experience to prepare you for your NS role, and after!
