Based at the Home Team Academy, the Police Training Command (TRACOM) serves as the cornerstone of training the Singapore Police Force (SPF). Every Police officer and Full-Time Police National Service officer passes through its doors, undergoing training to equip them for their operational duties.

As a TRACOM trainer, SC/Sgt Jonathan is committed to excellence on and beyond the training ground. He’s also part of a team that trains the SPF Guard of Honour (GOH) Contingent for the National Day Parade (NDP). These dual roles demonstrate his dedication and passion as a trainer.

How has your TRACOM journey been?
It has been a fulfilling journey since I enlisted in August 2022! From sharing the fundamentals of physical fitness to imparting crucial operational skills, every day presents me with new opportunities for growth. Seeing trainees become confident and capable officers has been the highlight of my journey.

Why did you choose to become a Training Officer for physical training?
I see physical training as a cornerstone for building fitness, resilience and camaraderie among officers. As a trainer, I craft physical training plans, conduct physical training and drill sessions to ensure that trainees can be more effective.

What are the values that you want to instil in SPF trainees?
Discipline, resilience, teamwork and confidence. Discipline is crucial for maintaining high standards and achieving excellence. Resilience helps us to overcome challenges and setbacks. Teamwork is essential for the success of any team. Finally, officers need to display confidence when they’re on duty.

How has being a Training Officer shaped your personal growth?
I've learnt how to motivate and inspire others in a way that really makes a difference. For example, I’ve had trainees who initially struggled to complete their fitness tests. However, through constant motivation and training, they eventually attained gold in their Individual Physical Proficiency Test! This made me appreciate how we can achieve a common goal when we work together.

You’re also one of the trainers for the SPF GOH Contingent for the NDP! Tell us about this role.
I was fortunate to be part of the GOH Contingent in NDP 2023. After going through the rigorous rehearsals and performances last year, I was identified as a trainer for this year’s contingent. I’m grateful for the opportunity to help my fellow officers prepare for the NDP and am committed to supporting them.

I worked closely with my supervisors and fellow trainers to develop a training plan that covers every aspect of the Contingent’s performance. My roles include overseeing drill practices, monitoring progress and providing guidance to ensure that we meet the highest standards.

What advice would you like to share with new SPF trainees?
Embrace the training process with an open mind and positive attitude! The journey will be tough but is also incredibly rewarding. Stay focused, be resilient and look out for your fellow trainees – you’re all in this together!
