Teaching is about more than imparting knowledge; it also inspires positive change. Honorary Assistant Superintendent of Police (Volunteer) (Hon ASP (V)) Joshua Tan embodies this principle by blending his dedication for teaching with his deep passion for community service. As an Honorary Volunteer Special Constabulary (VSC) (School) officer since 2015, Hon ASP (V) Joshua makes an impact beyond the classroom through patrolling the neighbourhood around the secondary school where he teaches!

What inspired you to become an Honorary VSC (School) officer?
Since young, I’ve always aspired to become a Police officer as I respect the Singapore Police Force (SPF) for its role in keeping the community safe and secure. Thus, when I was offered the chance to be an Honorary VSC (School) officer, I immediately seized the opportunity to fulfill one of my childhood dreams.

What does your role as an Honorary VSC (School) officer encompass?
I patrol the neighbourhood around my secondary school and provide guidance to school leaders on matters related to offences such as theft, drugs and other illegal activities. I also serve as the primary point of contact between my school and the SPF on occasions when we need to work together.

For Hon ASP (V) Joshua Tan, serving as an Honorary VSC (School) officer has helped him to better help students make the right decisions and become better citizens.

To prepare for my volunteer role, I underwent a two-week training session at the Home Team Academy. Our training included unarmed combat tactics as well as practical shooting practices. We also attended lectures on Singapore’s laws and learned some insights from Home Team Departments such as the Central Narcotics Bureau and various SPF units.

How do you balance your teaching responsibilities with your volunteer work?
I’m well-able to balance my responsibilities as I regard my duties as a teacher and an Honorary VSC (School) officer to be complementary. Both roles involve dedicating time to guide students in making the right decisions and becoming better citizens.

What’s the most meaningful experience you’ve had as an Honorary VSC (School) officer?
One of my most meaningful experiences involved a case that took an unexpected turn. While speaking to a student about an offence, I discovered that he was himself the victim of another crime.

It was eye-opening for me to witness how sensitively and meticulously the Ground Response Force officers and Investigation Officers from Woodlands East Neighbourhood Police Centre managed the situation. Working alongside my school’s full-time counsellor, I accompanied my student during the investigation process.

How do you inspire your students to give back to the community through volunteering?
I always share with my students the adage, “It’s better to be in a position to give than to be in a position where you need to receive.”

I challenge them to do a good deed every day and always be on the lookout to make someone else’s life better. A little act of kindness can sometimes be more impactful than a big project that we embark on!

What message would you like to share with other Honorary VSC (School) officers this Teacher’s Day?
Keep up the hard work and heart work. Through our hands pass the future of our nation!

What advice would you offer to another teacher who’s interested in becoming an Honorary VSC (School) officer?
Having the opportunity to go for Police-centric training and learning more about the law provides a sense of empowerment that complements our core work as teachers. Go for it if you have the chance!
