The Protective Security Command (ProCom) is a specialist unit established in 2016 to enhance the protective security capabilities of the Singapore Police Force (SPF) by tapping on the operational readiness of National Service (NS) officers. ProCom’s mission is to protect strategic locations and major events during peacetime and national emergencies.

ProCom is a NS-centric unit where majority of its officers are NS Full-Time officers. Equipped with state-of-the-art gears, ProCom officers patrol high profile areas to deter potential threats. Among them is Special Constable Corporal (SC/Cpl) Berkhamp Raj Lassar, who has a passion for leadership, chose ProCom as his vocation to immerse himself in its specialised training and operations.

What’s the role of ProCom officers?
ProCom officers play a crucial role in enhancing the SPF’s public security capabilities. We patrol security-sensitive locations to project Police presence and are deployed during major events such as the Formula 1 race and the Shangri-La Dialogue to maintain public security and safety. This aligns with ProCom’s motto to always Protect and Prevail!

What’s your responsibility as an Assistant Trainer in ProCom?
The Training branch trains officers in weapon handling, various types of searches, and tactical manoeuvres when engaging and neutralising threats within an urbanised environment.

I’m a Weapon and Tactical Training Assistant Trainer, and I work alongside our regular Trainers to conduct lessons to prepare officers and equip them with the necessary skillsets to perform their duties proficiently as first responders. During training, I provide refresher training to ProCom officers (including NSmen) on the Close Quarter Battle and Event Security. This includes the use of the hand-held metal detector and conducting searches of person and vehicles.

How long is the training period in ProCom, and what can trainees expect?
The Protective Security Unit Basic Course is a five-week programme that covers a range of topics, including event security screening knowledge, firearms training, and physical training. The course also incorporates scenario-based trainings to prepare officers for real-world incidents, offering practical experience in managing various situations on the ground.

For example, responding to suspicious persons and packages is one scenario-based training session that we conduct. The Trainers will assess trainees’ responses to the situation and guide them on developing their critical thinking skills, which are essential when dealing with threats.

What values have you gained during NS that you find most valuable?
I’ve learnt the importance of courage and attentiveness. As an Assistant Trainer, it’s essential to address and correct mistakes with forthrightness, as trainees learn by observing what we do. Without this courage, being an effective Trainer would be impossible.

I also learnt to be attentive, recognising that each trainee has unique learning abilities. Balancing discipline with engaging teaching methods ensures that trainees remain focused and absorb the material effectively.

What do you find rewarding as an Assistant Trainer?
The most rewarding aspect is seeing trainees transform into confident ProCom officers who uphold high standards and professionalism. This growth not only fills me with pride but also validates the effort and dedication invested in their development. Additionally, the friendships forged throughout the training process holds significant value to me.

How has NS influenced your future or career aspirations?
Serving my NS in the SPF has motivated me to become the best version of myself. After completing my NS experience, I’d like to further my studies and then pursue a career as an SPF officer. I believe that a career in the SPF is fulfilling, enriching, and is aligned with my desire to help others.

What advice would you give to incoming enlistees interested in joining ProCom?
ProCom provides individuals with the opportunity to take on responsibilities and leadership roles. Officers are required to step out of their comfort zone and be prepared for a challenging and rewarding job. The satisfaction of contributing to a safer country for our family and friends makes every minute worth it.

Finally, be open to change and learn from your peers to gain valuable experiences! This will not only prepare you for your NS, but also for your future.
