SPF Training Excellence Awards, Training Team of the Year: Vessel Search Training Team, Police Coast Guard, Insp Aloysius Tay, ASP Mafiz Bin Mohd and Insp Jerry Su
In the ever-evolving maritime security landscape, the success of frontline operations hinges on the strength of training programmes. The Vessel Search Training Team, led by Inspector (Insp) Jerry Su, together with Insp Aloysius Tay and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mafiz Bin Mohd from the Police Coast Guard’s (PCG) Training & Development Branch, has a combined experience of 51 years in the PCG.
Insp Su has served in the PCG since he joined the Singapore Police Force (SPF) in 2005, while Insp Tay and ASP Mafiz were posted to PCG in 2014 and 2002 respectively. Their dedication to training was recognised at the recent SPF Training Excellence Awards Ceremony, where they were named one of the 12 Training Teams of the Year.
A Learner-Centric Approach
The team empowered officers by designing training programmes that catered to a range of learners, from new trainees to seasoned officers. Conducted at the PCG’s Boarding and Search Trainer (BST), the scenario-based training replicates real-world environments to prepare officers for actual operations.
“Positive reinforcement and encouragement are crucial to keep trainees motivated and foster their development,” shared Insp Su. ASP Mafiz echoed this learner-centric philosophy, emphasising the importance of empathy and support for officers facing steep learning curves.
Watching their trainees succeed and excelling in their duties is very rewarding for the team. The opportunity to pass on the skills that they’ve acquired over decades, and to mentor a new generation of trainers, keeps them striving for excellence. Congratulations to the Vessel Search Training Team on winning the SPF Training Team of the Year Award!
SPF Training Safety Champions Awards, Land Division Category: SSSgt Mohammad Azrul Bin Azmi, Division Training Officer, Ang Mo Kio Police Division
In the realm of Police training, safety is paramount. For Senior Staff Sergeant (SSSgt) Mohammad Azrul Bin Azmi, this isn’t just a principle – it’s a mission. One of two winners of the SPF Training Safety Champion for Land Divisions, SSSgt Azrul is recognised for making significant strides in enhancing the safety protocols in Ang Mo Kio Police Division.
SSSgt Azrul joined the SPF in 2014 and was posted to Hougang Neighbourhood Police Centre as a Ground Response Force officer. His perspective on training was shaped in 2016 when he first took a Police Contact Tactics trainer course and was certified as an Adjunct Trainer.
In 2019, after four years of frontline service, SSSgt Azrul transitioned to the role of Division Training Officer (DTO), bringing his frontline experience and a fresh perspective on training safety.
“Safety should never be an afterthought,” shared SSSgt Azrul. “When officers come for training, I want them to know that they’ll be safe from the start till the end.”
As a DTO, SSSgt Azrul was tasked with overseeing officers’ safety across a range of training programmes, including Police Contact Tactics, Taser training, as well as Public Order and Public Security training. His commitment to safety has been unwavering, ensuring that every training scenario is conducted with care.
During Taser training, SSSgt Azrul introduced barricades to demarcate shooting lanes, ensuring that trainees remained within their designated areas during live classification shoots. This has significantly reduced the risk of accidents and has since become a standard practice in all Taser training sessions.
“To be a good trainer, I can’t be stagnant and complacent,” declared SSSgt Azrul. “The opportunity given to me motivates me to keep going and improve myself both as a trainer and a person.”
Driven by a passion for teaching and supported by his dedicated team, SSSgt Azrul’s efforts have not gone unnoticed by his Training Team and trainees. Congratulations to SSSgt Azrul on winning the SPF Training Safety Champion (Land Division) Award!
