In the line of duty where every shift presents new challenges, love often finds its way in the most unexpected places. For Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ang Hua Huang and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Lin Yuehong, they first met at the Investigation Branch of Tanglin Police Division.
From Colleagues to Soulmates
After joining the Singapore Police Force (SPF) in 2013, ASP Ang was posted to Tanglin Police Division as an Investigation Officer (IO) in 2014. She was in the same team as DSP Lin and he was her assigned mentor. “She probably hated me when we did shifts together, especially night shifts. I was very focused at checking through the cases reported and often forgot about taking meal breaks. She suffered hunger pangs just waiting for me and often had to drag me out of my desk to eat.” DSP Lin shares. As time went on, their professional relationship evolved into a friendship.
In 2016, ASP Ang and DSP Lin assumed new roles as Team Leaders at Tuas Checkpoint and Punggol Neighbourhood Police Centre respectively. Sharing the same shift cycle and a passion for fitness, they spent their days off running together and naturally grew closer.
Running into Love
Love often unfolds in life’s simplest moments, and for ASP Ang and DSP Lin, it was during one of their many running dates in 2017 when everything changed. “I held her hand during one of our runs and I guess that was the start of our love story.” DSP Lin recalls.
In 2018, they tied the knot, sealing a bond built on trust, understanding, and a shared commitment to both their careers and personal lives.
Core Memories Unlocked
Among their most treasured experiences as a couple, two stand out – skydiving during their honeymoon in New Zealand and the births of their children.
They booked the skydiving adventure on impulse after a planned activity was cancelled due to bad weather. DSP Lin recalls, “For a moment, I regretted the decision. We’d just gotten married and here we were doing something so dangerous that might jeopardise our lives.” But as they took the leap, fear gave way to exhilaration. “When we landed safely, we were so glad that we survived and hugged each other,” he recounts with a smile.
Another unforgettable experience was the birth of their first child. ASP Ang shares, “During labour, he kept encouraging me. He was so focused on my well-being after delivery that the doctor had to remind him to look at our newborn. It was funny, yet so sweet!”
Balancing Duty and Family
As parents, ASP Ang and DSP Lin share the joys and challenges of raising a family. They have two young children – a bubbly two-year-old daughter and an adventurous one-year-old son, who has recently discovered the joy of climbing furniture. Reflecting on the challenges of keeping up with their super active son, DSP Lin quips, “No amount of IPPT training can prepare you for that!” They’re also pawrents to a five-year-old Maltese dog named Cookie.
Currently a Senior IO with the Anti-Scam Command, ASP Ang finds managing work and family a constant balancing act. “I plan my schedule ahead to set aside time for both work and family. It helps me to be more present in the moment,” she shares.
DSP Lin, an Operations Officer with Ang Mo Kio Police Division, adds, “We support each other during busy periods. If she’s on duty, I handle the kids’ bedtime routines, and when I need to work over the weekend, she steps in to take charge.”
Building a Strong Bond
While differences in opinion are inevitable, ASP Ang and DSP Lin emphasise the importance of open and honest communication in overcoming challenges. “We may have differing views at times, but we always talk things through.” DSP Lin says. ASP Ang agrees, “He’s a level-headed person and we resolve issues calmly. Plus, he always puts family first.”
Their secret to maintaining a strong bond? Understanding each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and working together to complement each other. ASP Ang elaborates on their approach: “As they say, teamwork makes the dream work! We also take time to celebrate special occasions and show appreciation for each other.”
A Message of Love
On Valentine’s Day, the couple plans to keep things simple with a lunch date, just a moment to celebrate each other.
They also share a heartfelt message for fellow officers. “Happy Valentine’s Day to all! Many of you may be on duty but take time to appreciate your loved ones on this special day,” DSP Lin says. ASP Ang adds, “May this special day be filled with love, laughter and cherished moments!”
