Every year, the Traffic Police releases its Annual Road Traffic Situation, which notes the key traffic-related concerns during the period in question. Here are three things you should know about the Annual Road Traffic Situation 2024!
1. The number of traffic accidents resulting in fatalities increased last year
This number rose from 131 cases in 2023 to 139 cases in 2024. The number of traffic accidents resulting in injuries also rose from 6,949 cases in 2023 to 7,049 cases in 2024.
This is despite stepped-up enforcement by the Traffic Police, with an increase in violations detected last year.
The primary causes of accidents were due to motorists’ failure to keep a proper lookout, lack of adequate vehicle control and lane-changing without due care.
2. Elderly pedestrians and motorcyclists are the most vulnerable road user groups
Elderly pedestrians continue to be a concern, being overrepresented in pedestrian fatalities. The elderly population made up 12.5% of the overall Singapore population in 2024 but was involved in 42.3% of all fatal traffic accidents involving pedestrians, and accounted for 44% of pedestrian fatalities.
Motorcyclists also remain disproportionately involved in traffic accidents that resulted in injuries or death. While motorcycles made up 14.7% of Singapore’s total vehicle population in 2024, motorcyclists or pillion riders were involved in 55.2% of all traffic accidents and accounted for 59.9% of traffic fatalities.
3. Enforcement will be enhanced
To address the increasing trend in traffic accidents, casualties and speeding violations, the Traffic Police will take a tougher enforcement stance and increase its enforcement efforts.
The speed enforcement function will be activated in more red-light cameras while composition sums and demerit points for speeding-related traffic offences will be raised from 1 January 2026.
