INTRODUCTION
As Singapore’s road infrastructure continues to develop and evolve, the role of Traffic Police has progressed from manually controlling traffic at road intersections before the introduction of automated traffic lights, to now safe-guarding the safety of all road users with the aid of modern technology.
Since the early 20th century, white has become the colour of Traffic Police. The highly visible colour was chosen for its uniform to distinguish Police Officers engaging in road traffic control.
MISSION
To enhance the safety of road users through education, engagement, and enforcement.
ROLES/FUNCTIONS
Traffic Police’s main roles are:
- To enforce road traffic rules to maintain law and order on the roads
- To investigate into all injury and fatal road traffic accidents as well as serious traffic violations
- To formulate traffic policies
- To set training standards of the driving schools, and administer the theory and practical driving tests before issuing driving licences to the public
- To regularly educate and engage the community to raise the road safety awareness through road safety campaigns, events, and dialogues
