The Singapore Road Safety Council (SRSC) and Traffic Police (TP), with the support of the Land Transport Authority, Ministry of Education, People’s Association and Automobile Association of Singapore, launched Singapore Road Safety Month 2023 campaign on 1 July 2023.

Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Minister of State (MOS), Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of National Development, attended the launch as the Guest of Honour.

In his opening address, MOS Faishal emphasised the importance of abiding by road traffic laws and practising safe road use habits. “We should follow traffic signs and laws, and exercise courtesy when using the roads,” he said. “When we all play our part, we set good examples for one another, especially for younger road users.”

Promoting Road Safety in the Community
One of the highlights of this year’s campaign is the Road Safety for All Carnival at the Toa Payoh Hub Mall Atrium. Held from 1–2 July 2023, it attracted about 8,000 members of the public.

The carnival showcased educational exhibits and engaging activities from eight partner-agencies and helped raise awareness of the dangers of speeding and jaywalking. “We hope that the community can join us and help us spread the importance of road safety,” said Mr Bernard Tay, Chairman, SRSC. “Members of the public can continue to play their part in ensuring that everyone can return home safely to their loved ones.”

Community partner SBS Transit brought the “Be Seen, Be Safe” bus to Toa Payoh Central, allowing visitors to board a bus and learn where the blind-spots are from the driver’s seat. This enables road users to be more mindful when travelling in the blind-spots of bus drivers, for the safety of all road users. SBS Transit also highlighted safe commuting habits with its “Flag the Bus Early” campaign.

Together, TP and its community partners were keen to share the message that keeping our roads safe is a collective responsibility. “The top causes of accidents this year are failing to keep a proper lookout, failing to have proper control of one’s vehicle, and failing to give way to traffic with the right of way,” explained Senior Assistant Commissioner Daniel Tan, Commander TP. “The Traffic Police would like to urge all road users to exercise graciousness and adopt good road sense to keep our roads safe for everyone.”
