Let’s go viral! In late-2023, the Scam Public Education Office (SPEO) of the Singapore Police Force (SPF) collaborated with the National Crime Prevention Council and Ministry of Manpower to launch an innovative TikTok challenge. This unique public education initiative was designed to not only raise general awareness about scams, but also to engage with and empower migrant workers and migrant domestic workers.

A Scam-tastic Idea
Participants were encouraged to showcase creative scam prevention strategies on TikTok, such as by promoting the ScamShield app, checking with one’s trusted contacts and fostering a culture of mutual sharing about scams within the community.

The challenge garnered an enthusiastic response from migrant workers and migrant domestic workers, with many sharing their personal stories and tips through TikTok, helping to foster a collective community effort against scams. Among the standout videos were a number that used humour and community-specific references and musical cues to make their point.

Going Beyond TikTok
On 24 March 2024, the top 10 winners were invited to a prize presentation ceremony organised by SPEO at the Police Headquarters, where they received their prizes from Director SPEO and concurrent 1 Deputy Director of the Operations Department, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SAC) Devrajan Bala. Members of the Migrant Workers' Centre also attended the event as guests.

The success of the TikTok challenge highlighted the importance of engaging migrant workers and migrant domestic workers through innovative public education efforts, thereby enhancing community resilience against scams. Congratulations, winners! :D
