Meet Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jeremy Png, a seasoned Singapore Police Force (SPF) officer with a career spanning over three decades. From patrolling the streets of Singapore to training the next generation of Police officers, he has dedicated his life to serving and protecting his community. But few know about his secret alter ego – a clown with a knack for comedy, bringing joy to hospitalised patients and putting smiles on faces. Discover how DSP Png juggles his day job with his passion for spreading laughter and cheer to people.

Tell us more about your current role in the Training Command (TRACOM)?
I’m currently a Course Manager with the TRACOM, under the Leadership and Executive Training School. I oversee the training of Senior Officer Trainees, ensuring that they’re equipped with the skills, knowledge and values to excel in their roles.

How did you first learn about the Caring Clown Unit and what made you join it?

My church mate invited me to join the Caring Clown Unit in 2010. I’ve always loved making people happy by entertaining them, and I have a strong passion for helping others, especially the weak and the vulnerable. After following them to the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) for one session, I decided to join the Caring Clown Unit for a good cause.

What do you do at the Caring Clown Unit?
We visit the hospital once every three months, moving from ward to ward. We tell stories, sing songs, sculpt balloons and perform magic tricks to help the children to deal with the range of emotions they may experience and to distract them from painful or frightening hospital procedures.

How do you balance your work and volunteering?
I know my volunteering schedule one year in advance, so I plan ahead to ensure that I set aside time to visit the hospital on that particular day.

How does the support of your supervisors and the SPF contribute to your motivation and commitment to volunteering?
The support of my supervisors and the SPF means a great deal to me. Knowing that my organisation values and encourages my volunteer work motivates me to continue making a positive impact in the community. It's heartening to see that the SPF recognises the benefits of community outreach and is supportive in allowing us to spread joy to those in need. This support strengthens my commitment to volunteering and inspires me to continue finding ways to give back.

Was there an unforgettable experience during your volunteering work?
We hardly have the opportunity to visit the Paediatric Oncology Ward. Besides being required to wear a mask and practising good personal hygiene, we also need to perform our tricks from a distance so that the children are not affected. I remember doing an interesting shadow play with light and music. This experience strengthened my commitment to continue serving in the hospital as a volunteer.

What can others learn from your selfless approach to volunteering and your commitment to inspiring the next generation?
Despite sacrificing family time to volunteer, my loved ones are my biggest supporters. My wife is understanding and supportive, while my daughter is inspired by my selflessness. I share my hospital encounters with her, showing her the impact of my work.

What drives me? A passion for helping others and making a difference. I find motivation in bringing laughter and joy to children, helping them cope with difficult emotions. For me, living life to the fullest means being a blessing to others.

Is there any link between policing and volunteering? Would you encourage others in the Force to volunteer outside of their core duties?
It has been written in the Police Pledge to serve our community, and volunteering connects us directly to people. It’s a great way to gain valuable experience and boost our confidence.

There are many volunteer opportunities in Singapore, and I strongly encourage our SPF officers to generously donate their time to these worthy causes. Besides contributing meaningfully to society, it makes an immeasurable difference in people’s lives through acts of kindness and support.

In a world where uniforms and roles often define the SPF, DSP Png's remarkable journey shows us that true fulfilment comes from embracing our passions and using them to make a difference. You too can contribute to serve the community. Find out more about our SPF volunteer programmes here!
