Looking back, moving forward – my SPF internship experience!
By: Alethea Lee
Dear Past Self,
You’re about to embark on an internship with the Singapore Police Force (SPF) as a Journalist for Police Life, and you’re in for an incredible journey!
As a third-year student at Temasek Polytechnic, you applied for an internship with the SPF’s Public Affairs Department and was offered a place. Right now, you might be feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness, but this unique experience will exceed your expectations. You’re not just going to learn; you’re going to grow in ways you didn’t anticipate!
Expectations Versus Reality
Initially, you expected a formal office environment at the SPF. However, you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise. The candidness and warmth of your colleagues will take you aback and dispel your previous expectations!
As an introvert-turned-extrovert, you’re unsure of the bonds you’ll forge during this internship. Yet, you’ll find yourself surrounded by sincere, generous colleagues. Their warmth will make your transition from student to intern less daunting. Sharing their expertise and experience, they’ll help you navigate unfamiliar terrains and make you feel like a valued member of the team.
New Skills, New Horizons
You’ll get to interview officers and collaborate with colleagues on articles. You’ll also realise the importance of being present in the situation and practicing active listening.
You’ll grow in your photography. With guidance from your colleagues, you’ll become more confident with each photoshoot! At the start, you’ll tend to overlook the background of your photos, but through trial and error, you’ll develop an eye for composition. You’ll learn to eliminate distractions in your subject’s surroundings to ensure each shoot looks visually appealing.
Unforgettable Memories
Would you believe that you'll find yourself going on a Police raid? Attending an enforcement operation will be eye-opening, giving you a glimpse into the world of Police work on the ground! You’ll observe the professionalism of Police officers as they execute their duties to safeguard our community every day.
However, writing this article will also pose distinct challenges, demanding urgency and precision of language to describe the offences. Your key takeaway is that you’ll learn to be efficient in high-pressure situations by making swift, accurate revisions to meet tight deadlines.
Attending the National Day Parade (NDP) rehearsal will stand out as another unforgettable experience. You’ll have the opportunity to witness the SPF Guard of Honour (GOH) contingent in action and performing a feu de joi (a French term for a formal celebratory display of gunfire) for a National Day article.
Additionally, you’ll have the chance to interact with Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Muhsin Bin Abdul Razak, the SPF GOH Contingent Commander. Speaking to DSP Muhsin and watching the entire contingent in action will leave you with newfound respect for all their tireless efforts. Hats off to everyone involved!
A Leap of Faith; a Lifetime of Lessons
Even though you’re unsure of what to expect when entering a new environment, I hope that after this internship experience, you’ll be braver in the next chapter of your life.
Embracing uncertainty gives you a chance to step out of your comfort zone and embrace growth. Take a deep breath and remember that growth is a non-linear journey. As the saying goes, “you miss 100% of the shots you don't take.”
I’m glad that you’re taking a leap of faith to join the SPF for your internship. This will be a transformative experience, teaching you valuable skills and helping you grow both professionally and personally. You’ll be very grateful for all the learning opportunities you’ll have here!
Yours sincerely,
Alethea from the Present
